GREAT BARRIER REEF

Fascinating Underwater World

With the 360° panorama »GREAT BARRIER REEF«, artist Yadegar Asisi creates an impressive yet sensitive portrait of one of the greatest natural wonders on Earth.

The Great Barrier Reef – the largest coral reef on our planet – unfolds across more than 3,000 square metres of panoramic surface, revealing an overwhelming richness of detail and colour intensity.

From a fictional perspective beneath the ocean’s surface, visitors experience the fragile beauty of a world that usually remains hidden from human view. Shimmering corals, vibrant schools of fish, and the refraction of light in the blue and green depths of the ocean create an immersive spatial experience that inspires awe – while at the same time raising awareness.

The work is based on tens of thousands of underwater photographs and sketches that Asisi collected during several expeditions with Australian documentary filmmaker Ben Cropp.

The result is a hyper-realistic cosmos that brings together diverse natural environments and water depths within a single circular image

– artistically condensed yet firmly grounded in scientific research.

A specially composed soundscape by Eric Babak, with whom Asisi has collaborated for many years, complements the visual staging: shifts of light between day and night, atmospheric sounds, and music merge with the scenery to form an impressive, fully immersive installation.

Accompanying the panorama, an exhibition provides fascinating insights into the biological diversity and ecological significance of the Great Barrier Reef, as well as into the threats facing this unique habitat.
